Herschelle Gibbs finished the Twenty20 Cup group stages with Glamorgan as the batsman with the highest average in the competition, though his county failed to qualify.

Gibbs was third overall in the averages with 56.20 but inferior only to bowlers Shaun Udal (98) and Tim Groenewald (86) who had falsely superior averages because of the amount of not outs towards the end of innings’.

Gibbs, who was batting at number three, had a top score of 98 off just 52 balls against Northamptonshire. He also scored 76 off 51 balls against Somerset in a losing cause.

He was omitted from South Africa’s Test tour squad that is currently in England but coach Mickey Arthur assured Gibbs that he will be a key member of the one-day team in August and he will also be considered as a replacement batsman should any of the current team pick up an injury.

Gibbs, 34, will be playing exhibition matches for celebrity pub team Lashings before rejoining the South Africans next month.
