Bigstar Players : Herschelle Gibbs : On the Spot

Hobbies: Golf (I play off five but it never gets any easier), shopping and watching Manchester United on TV, when they’re playing well that is.

Favourite Movie(s): Gladiator, See No Evil Hear No Evil, which is quite a few years old but still brilliant.
Favourite Movie Star(s): Has to be actresses: Demi Moore and Sharon Stone.
Favourite Music Act(s): I like 80’s stuff, though nothing in particular. I also like soul, R & B, a bit of Luther Vandross, George Benson and Frank Sinatra.
Favourite Food: It has to be KFC; I love their chicken.
Favourite Drink: Jack Daniels is my favourite alcoholic drink, but I have no favourite as soft drinks go.

Favourite Holiday Destination:
Fancourt in George, South Africa, where they played the President’s Cup golf event a couple of years ago.

Favourite Ground:
Newlands, Cape Town. It has to be.
Least Favourite Ground: Probably Ahmedabad in India as the setting’s not great. I played there once and that was enough, I think.
Most Memorable Match: The 1999 World Cup semifinal at Edgbaston. It ended in a tie but could have gone either way; it was the complete one-day match that had everything. Warney said afterwards that he bowled me the second-best delivery he had ever bowled after his ‘Gatting ball’.

Match You Most Want to Forget:
The game before, when I dropped Steve Waugh and we lost the game. He supposedly said to me then ‘You just dropped the World Cup’ but Steve said in his biography that he said, ‘You just lost the game.’ It was an unbelievably good innings that he played, though.
Your Cricket Heroes: Peter Kirsten – I always admired him and wanted to play like him. He’s been there for me for the last 14 years as a coach and friend. Sadly I never played with him; Also Viv Richards.
Greatest Influence(s): My Dad Hermann and Peter Kirsten.
Favourite Non-Cricketing Sportsman: Tiger Woods.
Toughest Opponent: I’d say Murali because he’s hard to read out of the hand and although he’s still difficult anyway, it helps a lot if you can read out of the hand.
Best Friend in Cricket: Gary Kirsten - I learnt lots from him on and off the field.
Funniest Man in Cricket: Chris Harris - I played with him at Lashings and found him to be a very humorous guy.

Funniest Man in the World:
My mate Colin - he’s not from this planet.

Most Embarrassing Moment:
When I dropped ‘that’ catch. It’s not as though he hit it that hard. I couldn’t believe it myself as it was an absolute lolly.
If you weren’t a cricketer…: I’d be playing rugby or soccer, though I would probably have preferred rugby. I gave up soccer at 16 after I played for South Africa Schools Under-16. When I was 16 I had to choose between cricket and rugby and in ’94 I chose cricket. Thankfully it was the right decision.
Greatest Skill That May Surprise Us: Apart from batting? I’ll think about it.
