Last year’s wooden spoon winners Deccan Chargers beat Bangalore in the final of the Indian Premier League’s second edition in Johannesburg on Sunday evening.
Deccan, captain by Australia legend Adam Gilchrist, scored 143-6 in their 20 overs and restricted the Bangalore Royal Challengers to 137-9 to win by six runs. Robin Uthappa, strangely batting at eight, made it a closer finish having contributed to 12 runs from Ryan Harris’s penultimate over the innings, but it was not enough in the event.
India’s left-arm seamer Rudra Pratap Singh bowled the last over as Bangalore required 14 runs from it, but another tight over sealed the title and sparked wild celebrations on the outfield.
Herschelle Gibbs had top scored for the Chargers with 53 not out while his opening partner Gilchrist failed to score despite hitting 85 from just 35 balls in the semi-final on Friday.
Bangalore skipper Anil Kumble, who stepped in to lead the side after Kevin Pietersen returned to England, took 4-16 from his four overs after bowling the first over of the match.
