Bigstar Players : Herschelle Gibbs : Diary

I sort of expected to be dropped
Feb 15, 2008 | Herschelle Gibbs

It’s a strange feeling being at home playing domestic cricket in South Africa while the boys are touring, but I am staying positive and know I can bounce back.

It was a bit disappointing when I found out I had been left out of the touring party but I was sort of expecting it. I am looking at it on the bright side and think that missing two Tests in Bangladesh is not the worst thing to have happened to me.

I don’t mean that in a disrespectful way to the country, it's just that I have always been a player that thrives on the toughest challenges whether it’s in Sri Lanka facing Murali or in Australia facing Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne. At the moment I don’t think Bangladesh will put up too much of a challenge against us. But I will be there for the one-day series and I am looking forward to that.

It would be disappointing if the selectors are looking to take the same Test squad on to India next month as I was looking forward to that trip, but again, I cannot afford to get too down about these things as they are out of my control.

Nobody has been in touch with me about what I have to do to get back or to offer their support but that doesn’t bother me. I am concentrating on playing domestic cricket now. There are plenty of games coming up so there is not much time to dwell too much; not even to play a few rounds of golf either!

In terms of the controversy leading up the selection of the squad, I don’t want to spend much time talking about that as it’s between other people but I would say that I would never have wanted to have been picked because of my race, just making the numbers up. What will be, will be and all I can do is score runs and try to persuade them to pick me again in the future.

The bottom line for me is that it’s not all doom and gloom. I have had these setbacks before and come through. It’s about how you respond to these times rather than what happened to get you there.
