Herschelle Gibbs scored his 20th one-day international century and fourth since August to help South Africa to victory and a 5-0 series sweep over West Indies.

Gibbs, who had scores of five, 15 and 39, cracked 102 off 84 balls to steer the Proteas to an eight-wicket win on the Duckworth-Lewis method in Johannesburg as South Africa reached 211-2 from 28.5 overs in reply to West Indies’ 295-7 off their allotted 50 overs. South Africa’s recalculated target was 211 from 31 overs.

Although Gibbs was rightly voted man of the match the occasion belonged to Shaun Pollock, who played his last game for South Africa after announcing his retirement from internationals last month.

Pollock claimed 1-33 to finish with 393 one-day wickets from 303 matches. He then was fittingly in the middle to score the winning two runs off Ravi Rampaul, while Jacques Kallis was 74 not out from 70 deliveries. The win capped the career of South Africa’s most successful Test and one-day bowler. Pollock’s next assignment will be the Indian Premier League in April. 

Devon Smith earlier made 91 for West Indies, while Shivnarine Chanderpaul chipped in with 51. What began as a successful tour for West Indies with their first Test win on South African soil in December, ended with a whimper, losing the ODI’s 5-0 after a 2-1 Test series reverse.
